The Walk-On’s Independence Bowl will be altering its Kickoff K’s event in 2018, as it will host a 5K and half marathon on September 15.

This is the fourth year of the Kickoff K’s, and the first to feature a half marathon. The half marathon will begin at 7 a.m., with the 5K set to start at 7:15 a.m. Both races will begin and end at the Fern Marketplace.

The races will be put on by Sportspectrum, and runners can register via RunSignUp by clicking here.

The registration fee is $60 for the half marathon and $20 for the 5K through Aug. 15. From Aug. 16 through Sept. 14, the registration fee will be $70 for the half marathon and $30 for the 5K. On race day, the registration will be $75 for the half marathon and $35 for the 5K.

Runners are encouraged to register early in order to ensure they receive a Walk-On’s Independence Bowl Kickoff K’s shirt.

The half marathon will go through the historic South Highland neighborhood, including scenic streets such as McCormick St., Creswell Ave, Thornhill Ave., Ockley Dr., Unadilla St. and Fairfield Ave.

The overall male and female winner of the half marathon will receive a $1,000 cash prize, and the male and female winner from each age group (20-and-under, 21-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60-and-over) will win $75. The overall men’s and women’s winners of the 5K will receive a $250 cash prize, and male and female age group winners will receive $30.

Following the races, runners and spectators can expect a block party atmosphere in the Fern Marketplace, featuring live music, food and drinks, and giveaways.
